Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Introduction

Irritable Bowel Syndrome or commonly known as IBS is a group of symptoms related to gastrointestinal upset that vary a lot. Gastro intestinal health means good appetite, good elimination and hassle-free metabolism. But in Irritable Bowels all the normalcy is at hazard.

IBS has been classified as IBS-a, IBS -d and IBS -c types.

What causes IBS?

There are many theories about how IBS develops. Friendly Bacteria that remain in the Gut are either depleted after any viral or bacterial infection due to diarrhea or sometime bacterial overgrowth can also trigger the irritability in the bowels. Over use of antibiotics, stressful events and faulty dietary habits also contribute to it. Though IBS is not life threatening yet the sufferer loses quality of life and day to day activities and performance come to stalk.

Types of IBS

  • IBS -d means that the irritability in the Bowels are predominant with diarrhea like symptoms, bloating and urge to visit washroom frequently.
  • IBS-c means the irritability in the bowels are predominant with constipation like symptoms hard or lumpy stools and straining.
  • IBS -a or IBS-m has alternate diarrhea and constipation or mixed symptoms and abdominal cramps

Ayurveda Viewpoint

In Ayurveda GUT health means a lot. Ayurveda classics believe that if our gut is healthy we don’t contact the diseases. The modern research also confirm and consider GUT as the second brain and a lot of symptoms of stress can arise if guts are not healthy and reciprocally the stress can affect the gut health a lot so we commonly encounter stress related symptoms in IBS sufferers. These sufferers interestingly have a family history of someone having similar symptoms.

In Ayurveda diseases mentioned as Ajeerna and Grahni have lot of description about management of IBS related symptoms effectively.
